Located in Fukuchiyama, Tanshu-Kannonji Temple was founded in 720 by monk Hodo from India. In 961 Master Kuya built the seven temple buildings (shichido garan), and it became the center of Kannon beliefs in Tanba area, reaching the peak in Kamakura period. Today there are around 3600 pieces of writings and teachings left, which are designated cultural properties of Kyoto Prefecture.

The eleven-faced Kannon statue is famous for healing, good fortunes, and road safety. In the gardens there are cherry blossoms in the beginning of April, hydrangea in June, autumn leaves in late autumn and wintersweets from January to February, filling the temple with different colors throughout the year. Tanshu-Kannonji Temple is also known as the "Hydrangea Temple", and from June to July there are over 10,000 hydrangea flowers of 100 types blossoming in white, blue, purple and pink. The 4th Sunday in June every year there is also a "Hydrangea Festival", which is held with a series of events including the preaching of the monk, and attracts many people.

Inside the main hall there is a wall of "Daruma" dolls which catches the eye. People write their wishes on the back of the Daruma dolls and can take them home, but most choose to leave them in the temple on the wall, creating this photogenic spot. Another popular souvenir is a small wooden amulet (omamori) the size of the palm, with the picture of Buddha carved on one side and the words of Buddha written on the other. There are also many cute little buddha statues in the temple, in front of the garden and beside the main hall, constantly reminding people of buddha's warm presence.
