Jizozen-in Temple

Willow-like sakura trees at Jizozen-in Temple

This serene hillside temple is well worth making the trip to especially when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. You can enjoy a sweeping view over the plain of Ide Town, and clouds of weeping cherry blossoms. The tree is designated as a Natural Monument of Kyoto Prefecture. It’s estimated to be approximately 300 years old, and is related to Maruyama Park, located in the center of Kyoto City. The park’s first-generation weeping cherry tree and this tree have the same mother tree, actually. In Ide, you won’t have to battle the crowds to see the beautifully cascading petal-laden branches.

A 200-metre path runs from the majestic stone torii gate at its entrance to the main building – which is designated an Important Cultural Property – and both sides are lined with cherry trees. When the flowers bloom, they create an ethereal ceiling of pink above the route. And at night, bonfires are lit to allow you to experience the beauty of the blossoms in a whole new way.
