2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast for Kyoto Prefecture

Due to its long north-south geography, cherry blossoms in Kyoto Prefecture begin to bloom in the south in late March and gradually move northward. The blossoms are expected to be at their peak in Kyoto City around the end of March, and slightly later in the northern Tango area, in early April. Spring’s arrival can be enjoyed for about two months, beginning with the kawazu-zakura in mid-February and concluding with the omuro-zakura in mid-April.

The Japan Weather Corporation’s newest forecast, released on February 19th, predicts that cherry blossoms in Kyoto will start opening in 2026 around March 25th, reaching full bloom approximately by April 2nd. Although there have been significant temperature fluctuations this winter, the rise in temperature since mid-February suggests the blooming will be around average or slightly earlier than usual. Please check our Kyoto Prefecture Cherry Blossom Calendar for the latest updates.

What to Wear During Cherry Blossom Season

Spring in Kyoto sees large temperature swings between early morning and late evening. The average temperature is around 10°C (50°F), but it can climb close to 20°C (68°F) when the sun is out during the day. During the day, we recommend a light long-sleeved shirt with an easy-to-remove light jacket (such as a thin down jacket or windbreaker). Remember to dress warmly for evening cherry blossom viewing, as the temperature falls sharply after sunset.

Also, since flower viewing often involves a lot of walking, choosing broken-in sneakers and stretchy pants will help you enjoy your stroll more comfortably.

Karamatsu Park: Spectacular Views of Amanohashidate Enveloped in Cherry Blossoms

Kasamatsu Park, located 130 meters above sea level, is a magnificent viewpoint where Amanohashidate, one of the three most scenic views of Japan, appears like a dragon ascending to the sky. It is also the birthplace of the famous “Matanozoki” (viewing between one’s legs). In early to mid-April, the approximately 100 Somei Yoshino cherry trees in the park burst into bloom, adding a dreamlike pink hue to the spectacular view of the ascending dragon.

After strolling along the cherry blossoms, you can try your hand at traditional kawarake-nage (throwing unglazed earthenware plates) or enjoy lunch at the observation restaurant, Ama Terrace. During the nighttime light-up, you can also experience a magical aerial walk, passing through a tunnel of light on the cable car.
