A Fantastic Road Trip: Ujitawara to Wazuka via Jubuzan Tunnel

2026.02.19

Happy 1st anniversary to the Jubuzan Tunnel! (Opened February 24, 2025)

Now, come along for a scenic drive from Ujitawara Town to Wazuka Town via the tunnel!

In this area, you can experience the authentic vibes of the tea-growing region!

Note: The Jubuzan Tunnel is about 3km (1.8 miles) long, located in southeastern Kyoto—further south than Uji City.

Nishinoyama Observation Square (Ujitawara Town)

First stop is Nishinoyama Observation Square.

The cute Heart Cube photo spot and sweeping views of the tea plantations are waiting for you!

Fun fact: This town’s borders are in the shape of a heart! And that’s not all—Ujitawara has an incredible story! In 1738, Nagatani Soen developed the Aosei Sencha Seihou method right here in Ujitawara, which laid the foundation for the processing method of some of today’s Japanese green teas!

Katsuzen and Touge Chaya (Ujitawara Town)

Next, a quick 3-minute drive takes you to Katsuzen, a restaurant loved by locals and visitors alike.

You can enjoy crispy tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet) with Ujitawara-grown rice.

Experience the meaty goodness!

While the classic sauce is great, I love their refreshing oroshi-ponzu (citrusy soy sauce with grated radish) too!

Also, their plump, deep-fried jumbo prawn and melt-in-your-mouth creamy crab croquette are so good!

And the silky-smooth texture and mild flavor of the chawanmushi (savory egg custard dish) are like a warm hug.

Right nearby is Touge Chaya—a nostalgic spot that makes kids and adults alike feel like explorers!

After picking up some gifts, head through the tunnel to Wazuka, also known as “Teatopia!”

Wazukacha Cafe and Tenku Cafe (Wazuka Town)

Only 10 minutes away is Wazukacha Cafe.

Here, you can shop for single-origin Wazuka teas, enjoy panoramic views from Tenku Cafe, their private hilltop room, and more!

Tip: you can also rent an e-bike here to explore Wazuka on two wheels. Enjoy the town’s unique landscapes and natural scenery!

Tenku Cafe is a total dream—it feels like floating in the sky!

You can grab drinks and sweets at the front desk, so why not treat yourself to a little tea time while you’re here?
