This year marks the 100th anniversary of the revival of Ukai on the Uji River, a quintessential summer tradition in Uji!
Note: Ukai is a traditional fishing method where usho (cormorant masters) work in harmony with birds called umiu.
Here’s a quick look at a fun day exploring Uji, including ukai.
(Uji has so many amazing spots beyond what we’re sharing today. Plus, the “Kyo no Tanabata in Uji” festival is happening from August 7 to 9. Enjoy discovering the city your own way!)
First, let’s snap a photo with the chatsubo (traditional tea jar) shaped mailbox right outside JR Uji Station (22 min. from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line local train)!
This unique mailbox is actually in service!
Then, pop into the nearby Kyoto Candy Factory Iwai Seika (JR Uji Station Branch) for some fun shopping! (Address: 182-12 Uji Myoraku, Uji City, Kyoto)

You can also admire beautiful views of the Uji River, stop by a popular photo spot, the Murasaki Shikibu statue, and find your favorite Uji tea along the Byodoin-Omotesando street.
At the ukai boarding area sits Kisen Bridge, brimming with traditional charm.
Ukai on the Uji River appears in a diary literature of the Heian Period (794-late 12th century).
Though it was once interrupted, the tradition we see today was revived in 1926—just 100 years ago!
In Uji, umiu (Japanese cormorant) chicks have hatched through artificial incubation and raised with so much care and love.
Every single one of these precious birds is affectionately called Utty.
