Exhibition of Excavations in the Japanese Archipelago 2025(Special Exhibition・KEIHANNA EXPO 2025 Related Projects)
Regional Exhibition
The Breeze of Tenpyo period, blows through Yamashiro area
This year’s “Excavated Japanese Archipelago” exhibition will be held in Kyoto Prefecture for the first time in 22 years. In addition to the “New Archaeological Discoveries Exhibition,” which displays artifacts from notable archaeological sites excavated in recent years throughout Japan, there will also be a special exhibition entitled “The World of Haniwa row.”
Furthermore, as part of the “Archaeological Sites our city are Proud Of” exhibition, we will introduce distinctive archaeological sites from various regions under three themes: “The Cave Kingdom of Sasebo,” “Underwater Archaeological Sites in Lake Biwa,” and “The Thousand-Year Capital of the Eastern Provinces: From Ancient Tombs to Ancient Times.”
The concurrent regional exhibition, “The Breeze of Tenpyo period, blows through Yamashiro area,” will feature exhibits focusing on the Southern Yamashiro region during the Nara period.
Located just north of Heijō-kyō, Yamashiro Province is home to numerous important archaeological sites related to production, religion, and culture during the Nara period.
The exhibition will feature rare materials centered on archaeological sites that have yielded significant findings in recent surveys, including the Kuni Palace Site (Yamashiro Kokubunji Temple Site), where Emperor Shomu established his capital for more than three years; the Kamiodera Temple Site, where wooden tablets inscribed with waka poems from the Manyoshu were excavated; and the Kayanoki Site, where the base of the pagoda of Idedera Temple, the ancestral temple of the Tachibana clan, was discovered.
We will display rare materials, focusing on ruins that have yielded significant results in recent surveys.
The carefully selected artifacts collected from all over the country and the exquisite artifacts from the Southern yamashiro region can be viewed together for only about one month during the exhibition period.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity. Please visit the Kyoto Prefectural Yamashiro Local History Museum this fall.

A complete look at ancient tomb excavations(2025 Summer Mini Exhibition Kyoto Prefectural Archaeological Research Center, Public Interest Foundation, 158th Archaeological Seminar)
Excavations of ancient tombs have been carried out in the Yamashiro region for a long time, and the results of these excavations have been used to actively conduct research on the Kofun period.
The Yamashiro Local History Museum has a large collection of grave goods and haniwa clay figures unearthed during these excavations.
To coincide with the 158th Buried Cultural Properties Seminar being held at the museum by the Kyoto Prefectural Buried Cultural Properties Research Center (Public Interest Foundation), we will be bringing together all of the Kofun period materials in our collection, including materials that are not usually on display and materials that are too fragile to be loaned out.
Please come and see the items excavated from the tombs and the grave goods from the Yamashiro region that can only be seen at our museum.
