Shimenawa Making Experience
In the good old days, like every rural village, Miyama also had the habit of creating various straw items using rice straw from the newly harvested rice of that year. The straw ropes were made and crafted into various straw items such as sandals (zōri), straw bags (tawara), straw mats (komo), and sacred ropes (shimenawa).
Miyama Shimenawa Group crafts and dedicates large shimenawa to main shirine buildings including the main building of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. The size of Shimenawa can vary. It can be sometimes 12m long and 15cm thick. However, regardless of its size, the traditional skill of weaving a rope is the key.
Let's experience weaving a rope with the rice straw that is used for the shimenawa for Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, which is pesticide-free and sun-dried.
Each of you can craft your own ropes with your hands.
You can craft decorative wreaths with the rope you create, so please enjoy them as ornaments at your home. This experience can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.
