The town of Ayabe stands north of Kyotamba in Woodland Kyoto near the Yura River. Here, you’ll experience breathtaking views of nature and have the opportunity to explore the region’s rich history.

The town’s relationship with nature makes it an ideal place to reconnect with oneself. One way you can experience the slow life is via one of the farm stays – a popular way to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Enjoy the bounty of the area with mouthwatering meals or sip a traditionally brewed sake made from locally sourced ingredients.

Kumano Shrine

Beyond the fruits of the land, Ayabe also invites you to explore historical sites such as Oomoto Baisho-en and Kumano Shrine. The quaint town of Ayabe is the perfect getaway in the middle of Kyoto’s countryside. Make sure to add it to your itinerary.

From JR Kyoto Station:
Take the JR limited express Hashidate for Amanohashidate and ride until Ayabe Stn. About 1 hour.
*Limited express Maizuru and Kinosaki also stop at Ayabe Stn.

Savor Sonobe’s rustic countryside

Rurikei Valley

Sonobe Station, located in Nantan City, gives you unparalleled access to Kyoto’s pristine nature. A short bus ride from the station will transport you to the middle of Kyoto’s countryside. One natural wonder you will encounter is Rurikei Valley. Rurikei Valley features a 500-meter-tall ravine with enchanting waterfalls and cliffs that change with the seasons. Not far from the valley, you can unwind and relax in the healing waters of Rurikei Onsen.

It’s also worth exploring a few of the lesser-known temples and shrines in Sonobe. Ryuon-ji Temple with its beautiful autumn leaves and Ikimi Tenmangu Shrine, renowned for plum viewing, are two of our favorites.

As you can see, a trip to Sonobe will unlock a plethora of Kyoto’s wonders that are off the beaten path, making it a must-visit. The tourism association has relocated to the area in front of the station, and e-bike rentals are now available: https://sonobe-kanko.org/sharing_cycle/(Japanese language only)
